I am new to the field of metallography and am beginning by running electrochemical tests on small duplex stainless samples. I have been reading that surface preparation for microscopic techniques is very involved to get the surface to a pristine and unaltered state without scratches. Is this level of care needed when grinding and polishing metal samples for electrochemical tests? If not, are there any rules of thumb for preparation?
Refer to ASTM G5. Surface polishing down to 600 grit is good enough. If you want to take micrographs after corrosion testing, finer polishing will be helpful.
