Excitation dependent emission in Carbon dots

I have synthesized a pei passivated carbon dots. When I did fluoroscence spectoscopy (at different excitation wavelenths) for it, I observed an enormous shifts (around 40 nm) in emission spectra (exciting at 280nm resulted in emision peak at 480nme while exciting at 300nm resulted in emision at 520nm ). I am skeptical about this as its contradictory to many reports. Kindly help me in finding what may be the reason behind this?
