I know it's a question of definitions.
1. So let's define "word" as something between two spaces in written speech or as something which would appear between two spaces in a transcript of spoken speech.
2. And let's define English as the entire corpus of written and spoken utterances of all those people who define themselves (or are defined by their parents) as native speakers of English.
Let's include all names of species, chemical compounds and all technical nomenclatures, all styles, genres and registers, all dialects and variants, all neologisms and buzzwords understood by at least three people (speaker-listener-observer) falling under point two. Let's use the broadest possible scope within these boundaries. So what do you say? What can be said about other natural languages?
