I have attendend dozens if not hundreds of seminars and talks and on ESL pedagogy, and at some point of the event there always comes the moment to discuss about the best ESL method.
I don't think there will ever be an agreement, but I want to hear from you.
What is your answer and why?
Coming from a background in ELT/TESOL and Applied Linguistics both in Mexico and the United States, it's a question that often comes up to this day.
While ESL and EFL contexts vary mainly due to the amount and type of exposure to the target language, they hold a number of similarities in their pedagogies.
I appreciate the early work of Prabhu on the matter.
In an article titled "There is no best method - why?", N. S. Prabhu (1990) discusses his perspective on why there isn't a "best" method.
He discusses three possible explanations:
1. different methods are best for different teaching contexts;
2. all methods are partially true/valid, and have a number of strengths; and
3. the notion of good and bad methods is subjective (and often misguided).
