Why the Energy is a really recurrent problem in Wireless Sensor Networks, whatever is the studied protocol (medium access, coverage, synchronization, security, ...and son on)

Did the simulations done to validate a given protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks reflect really what happens in real-life, while taking into account Energy constraint..
