There are a set of open issues that include : Internet of Things and Wireless Sensor Networks, Software Defined Networks, Network Security, and the Migration to IPv6. The Internet Engineering Task Force is addressing the latest challenges.

Internet of Things and Wireless Sensor Networks, Software Defined Networks, Network Security, and the Migration to IPv6, and VANET issues, are nowadays research fields, and I am asking about the future (may be unknown fields at all)
In this case, consider then LiFi (http://www.lifi-centre.com/), the application of graphene in optical communications (http://www.n3cat.upc.edu/projects/gwc) or just innovate your own research route.
