Methane is a hydrocarbon represented by the chemical formula CH4. In order to verify the origin of methane, there is a classification in the proportion of carbon-13, a stable natural isotope of carbon, contained in it. Methane found in marshes or in the digestive system of ruminants (methanogenic) has a lower carbon-13 ratio than methane gas from oil pipelines. As the global concentration of CH4 increased in the 1980s and 1990s, the proportion of carbon-13 also increased, which raised the concentration of gas emissions precariously in industrial production.

The use of natural gas must be encouraged. Natural gas is a low-carbon, clean and abundant fossil fuel that can be easily used for electricity generation. The high efficiency of the Jenbacher gas engine is perfectly suited for the reliable supply of decentralized electricity using natural gas as fuel. The use of natural gas in gas engines is characterized by the lowest level of carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions from all fossil fuels. In particular, it contains a minimum of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter. As a fuel, natural gas has become an essential energy source over the years. Natural gas is expected to become the most widely used fossil fuel for the next 50 years. Natural gas emits only 234 g of CO2 to produce 1 kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy while burning. In comparison, to produce the same amount of energy:

- the fuel rejects 300 g of CO2,

- the coal releases 384 g of CO2.
