Boron deficiency is becoming a concern n south asian environments.
There is a need to identify suitable inorganic/organic materials, understand the interaction between various nutrients for optimization of inputs, method of application (basal/foliar), crops' boron needs, enhancing the boron uptake efficiency, handling of the materials in problem soils (acidic/saline/sodic soils).
I wish to know/learn the advanced work carried out in this regard by the colleagues within RG?

Boron deficiency is mostly a problem in dicots, their B demand is approx. 10 times higher than the one of monocots. But this bears also a problem in mixed rotations where the dicots are fertilized with soil B, causing B toxicity in the following monocots. Thats the reason why we recommend in narrow rotations, for instance with rapeseed followed by two ceral crops to deliver additional B: to the dicot only by foliar application. Also in many cases the total B load to an agroecosystem is underestimated: Unknown to many colleagues P fertilizers contain plenty of B. In Germany the B load to the environment deriving from P fertilizers equals the amount from washing agents!

I agree with Dr. Schnug that foliar applications would be best for production in a field with a rotation that diverse. Solubor is a good example of a product that can be used for this application, and it can also be added to the soil when deficiency symptoms begin. Since it is highly mobile in the soil, I would not worry about it remaining in the field at high levels long after fertigation, therefore even high concentration applications directly to soil can be reversed with a wash out (or rainfall) using pure water if possible.
If you want a source of organic and slow-release boron, chicken litter has a high content, however note that it is also a substantial contributor of copper and zinc.

Boron is localized primarily in the cell wall. In case of boron deficiency the tissues are fragile, while on high levels may become unusually flexible. First symptoms appear in growing points and its characterized by cell wall abnormalities. It is interesting that germanium can substitute for boron mostly in carrot cell cultures. In Hungary we use mostly foliar application and these fertilizers contains sulphur, boron and other microelements altogether.
