Education, equality or diversity of opportunity?
It is generally conceded and accepted that education is the key factor in equal opportunities. But some authors such as Marie Duru-Bellat (2002) question the reality of this "equality" to the point of questioning it.
She speaks preferably of educational inequalities and writes on this subject "that "everything is played before 6 years", that school is powerless in the face of family determinisms, that academic success is biased by desperately persistent social inequalities? However, diplomas and their (consequent) social sanctions are hardly contested and meritocracy (or "republican elitism") is a respected and consensual ideology."
Is it equality or diversity of opportunity? What is equal opportunities? What are its limits in the journey of people? Would diversity of opportunities be more appropriate to describe this educational reality?
