I recently conducted a mass loss experiment spanning 5 weeks, with samples taken out weekly, for three different specimens. I observed that one of the steel specimens lost more mass in 1M of Acetic acid but fared better in 1M of HCl. So my question is, is this a normal occurrence? because the pH values of these acid concentrations suggest that it should corrode faster in HCl like the other two steel specimens.

I think it depends on the immersion time and the method you deployed in cleaning the corrosion products. The case you are referring to now could be a long time immersion period and at this time, since the one in HCl corrodes faster, the corrosion deposit will cover the sample surface, thereby retarding further corrosion. In the other hand, if your cleaning method is just by using your hands, then we could say, the cleaning is not consistence and that can promote errors.

it depends on several parameters, namely: the immersion time, the renewal deadline for the aggressive solution and the nature of the surface.
