Dugdale first published his classic study of the Jukes in 1877 in what was copyighted as the THIRD edition. Why not the FIRST edition?

The first version of the Jukes family degeneracy study in book form was published in 1877 as the third edition, not the first. Was this because he considered his previous conference presentations to the Prison Association and Charities as the first and second?

Maybe he considered the following book to be the first one:

Hereditary pauperism, as illustrated in the "Juke" family

by R L Dugdale (1874) and in 1877 he published two versions of the book, one entitled

"The Jukes" : a study in crime, pauperism, disease and heredity ; also, further studies of criminals

and another entitled:

The Jukes : a study in crime, pauperism disease, and heredity, that was published also in 1910.
