We have noticed a lot of good news regarding the environment due to a lock down caused by Covid-19. What will be the ultimate impact of Covid-19 on the Environment? Will it be sustainable or it’s temporary?
Cleaner air has perhaps been the single greatest positive effect of the lockdowns on the environment.
Cities across the world have seen pollution levels plummet as people have spent less time in vehicles, offices and factories and more time at home.
Meanwhile, with aviation grinding to a halt and millions of commutes no longer taking place across the world, emissions patterns in many countries would appear likely to follow the same downward trend.
In Venice, famous for its winding canals, water quality appears to have improved amid Italy's stringent coronavirus lockdown.
The change has meanwhile reportedly offered locals clear views of shoals of small fish, crabs and multicoloured plant-life - sights often obscured by busy boating movement in the Lagoon.
Liberated wildlife: As in Venice, wildlife elsewhere has also taken the opportunity presented by our widespread absence from suburban streets and city centres to venture out and explore.
In Lima, Peru, the lowest levels of PM10 and PM2.5 have been reported in the last month. This may be due to the reduced number of vehicles in the city as quarantine and curfew measures were taken. I would say air pollution levels may be reduced for as long as quarantines last.
During the last 50 years, it seems that ambitious activity and overuse/abuse of resources have had such a destructive effect on the Earth and our environment that we have already lost a lot from diversity of species to the policy making in environmental issues and even the healthcare system (which was indicated as defective and crippled all over the world).
I think that there is no permanent impact resulted and conceived directly from this outbreak! First, there are mandatory lockdowns that in a way had a constituent aftermath as we see as limited or declined air pollution. But please add the worst to this which is a devastating exponential increase in plastic pollution and environmental crisis! Lots of lots of PPEs, protective garments, masks, and worst plastic gloves are now dumped everywhere. So, I wonder why some environmentalists and even researchers are still so stoked and even euphoric about the decrease in carbon emission, sulfur dioxide, etc.!! They were the first in the frontline to promulgate the use of less plastic products and now! no research or criticism on such unprecedented and apprehensive plastic pollution in which we would definitely see the disastrous effects on lands and seas in the coming years.
Without this current lack of safe recycling of these products, I suppose that this plastic pollution would single-handedly cause water pollution and land infertility as well as much worse problems for ocean creatures, birds and all living beings. the amount of dumped artificial carbon-contained products would cause yet another air and system pollution in long-term.
Therefore, I have to say that we would be so myopic to only see this small glimmer of hope as a temporary decrease in emissions and air pollution! Not everything is summarized in seeing a clear blue sky! Wide-ranging systematic and method-based quantitative studies are needed to portray the unimaginable and insurmountable impact of such interruption.
Meanwhile, do not forget the sudden rush and over-activity of humans and industry to so-called "reopening and reviving the economy"! after this outbreak, which in turn will make things worse than normal!
Though seems unintentional now, the damage by us will be yet another act of permanent scarifying of the environment as always!
