We are about to set up 1000L horizontal PBR to produce H. pluvialis. Regarding water quality, I will appreciate if you share your experience on water quality requirements to culture H. pluvialis green algae. Someone suggested to use reverse osmosis system to feed the reactor instead of expensive ultra pure or distilled water system.

Cultivating Haematococcus pluvialis, renowned for astaxanthin production, involves careful monitoring of water quality. Reverse osmosis (RO) water, reducing contaminants, is ideal; constant monitoring assures adequate astaxanthin production. Essential nutrient levels (nitrogen, phosphorus, and trace elements) should be assessed in RO water, with supplementation using fertilizers if necessary. Maintaining a pH between 6.5 and 8.0 is vital; constant monitoring and adjustments ensure a stable pH environment. H. pluvialis grows at 15–25 °C; align the RO water temperature with the required range. Adequate light, whether natural or artificial, is required for photosynthesis in the photobioreactor. As a freshwater species, H. pluvialis requires low salinity; while RO water normally has minimal salt content, periodic tests maintain adequate levels. Mrs. Guadalupe Bravo - [email protected], the head of the Microalgal Culture Unit in Luis Arboleda Martinez Tech. Inst., Jaramijó, Ecuador, indicates that RO water should be sterilized prior using it in culture media for any microalga. RO water is better than faucet water since it has a lower amount of salts, but it still has bacteria that may contaminate the microalga culture.
