Children often enjoy playing with an invisible friend or a personified object, which is known as imaginary companion play. Most of the research were conducted in Western countries (USA or UK). My country, Japan, does not have such concepts. Recently, we have examined whether Japanese children have an imaginary companion, and found that some of the Japanese children did have an imaginary companion (Moriguchi & Shinohara, 2012. PloS One).

I asked several colleagues about this, but even in European countries, the answers were inconsistent. Please tell me whether your country does have an imaginary companion. I would like to know whether the phenomenon is universal.
