Cartesius principle of "preservation of amount of motion" agrees with such a notion i.e the upward phase of gravitational motion (raise) equals the downward phase (fall) of gravitational motion if described as pull and push motion phases in gravity phenomena, thus validating for conservative fields the notion of pull and push as motions
In science pull & push are ontologically distinct categories.
Cartesius principle is compatible with emerging of the into one ontology.
Intuituitively though, the line is more of a useful convention, albeit an extremely fruitful one, that generates Newtonian mechanics.
One wonders if the line is blured i.e we disort reality the other way thus Creating a new model of reality, something with some predictive power may emerge. As far as I know not even philosiphers of science or general philip have touched it

Let's imagine a spatial structure. A spatial structure has units and these are thought to be the "building blocks" of the structure. Pull and push represent dynamical (local) transformations. So if we imagine a dynamical spatial structure the causation of the pull and/or push must originate from the basic properties of the units that create the structure.
A spatial structure that is build up by units with the same basic properties is comparable with a topological field under invariant volume. That means that the deformation of the shape of every unit is caused by a local "push". It is not a local pull because the units of the structure already tessellate the volume of the structure. It is impossible to pull all the units closer to each other.
To deform the shape of 1 unit of the structure its surface area must be deformed by a push but because of the invariant volume the unit must push (deform) an adjacent unit (or units) in a corresponding way (input push = output push). The latter is the general mechanism behind the law of conservation of energy.
The concept is not new because the ancient Greek philosopher Parmenides of Elea had described that observable reality is created by an underlying reality that is build up by dynamical units. He reasoned that vacuum cannot exist because the whole universe was "filled" by this underlying structure.
