This is in the context of MNCs operating in different countries, where there are significant cultural, social and linguistic differences; and there could be situations of conflict management.
I would like to invite opinions of my learned friends on the issue of team management in global organizations. Organizational performance depends on team work. The factors of performance are people, process, technology. Process and technology are managed by people. Hence composition of team members is an important element.. The implication of team composition is required to be assessed, when the team is formed with people from diverse cultural and ethnic background with values and beliefs very different from one another. The only common factor is organizational goal. Some of the elements for smooth functioning may be: goal alignment, reduction of communication barriers, building trust, development of greater inter-personal familiarity, and social bonds.
In a global organisation, my feeling is that the composition and performance of a team will be more cohesive and effective based on the local setting. Take for instance, if the team work is to be carried out in Bangkok, the team make up should include a high local content followed by team members of other nationalities or cultural values. The advantage of having more local team members is to drive the project smoothly in a usual routine manner while those team members of other nationalities or cultures help in providing new or innovative ideas and technology and guide the team in the light of global perspectives and social responsibility.
Global enterprises can take advantage of cultural diversity based teams. Diversity brings eclectic ideas, creativity, and innovation. Cross-cultural training of diverse group of employees for sensitising everyone about each ones' culture, values, beliefs, and work ethos. It creates harmony among team members, acceptability, and adjustment between them. Cross-cultural training helps in goal alignment, reduction of communication barriers, building trust, development of greater inter-personal familiarity, and social bonds.
