According to the journal article I've posted, the Sysmex DI-60 can detect the different morphologies of the RBCs. I want to find out if the Sysmex DI-60 can detect not only the morphology of the RBCs, but it can also detect parasites, bacteria and viruses in the RBCs.
To overview, the Sysmex DI 60 analyzer is designed to pre-classify the 7 WBC morphology such as neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and others. It can also detect the characterization of RBC and platelets but it is not exclusively designed for the detection of parasites. So far, there is a study about Sysmex DI-60 and Plasmodium falciparum, it summarized that DI-60 may cause a false-negative result due to misclassified malarial parasites that are not only in low parasitemia (
The DI-60 is not primarily designed for the detection of malarial infection. It is used for pre-classifying red blood cells (RBC) and white blood cells (WBC) in blood smears and is not specifically used for detecting malarial parasites.
According to research by Park, M., et. al., entitled "Detection of Plasmodium falciparum using automated digital cell morphology analyzer Sysmex DI-60" (https://doi.org/10.1515/cclm-2018-0065), Sysmex DI-60 may flag suspicious cells that might indicate malarial infection. Although, it can cause misclassification of malarial parasitism, specially when there is low parasitemia which can lead to false negative results. Thus, it will be missed by the system even if parasitism is present.
With that, it should be noted that DI-60 is not a reliable system for detection for malaria diagnosis. Traditional blood smear microscopy still remains the gold standard for this procedure.
The Sysmex DI-60 isn't intended for identifying malaria parasites in the blood since its main function is analyzing blood cell morphology and conducting automated differentials. For malaria detection, other specialized tests like microscopy, rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), or molecular assays are typically used as they offer greater accuracy and precision in detecting malaria parasites.
To support this, an article published by Park et al. (2018) stated that a case of Plasmodium falciparum reported a false-negative result in the Sysmex DI-60.
