Faculty members within universities contribute to the development of the future citizens of the globe, and they deserve to be dignified in several aspects, one of which is a rewarding remuneration.

The Federal Government of Brazil has proposed a career plan, to take effect from 2013, to the teachers' unions of Institutes and Federal Universities
The starting salary of a teacher with a doctorate and exclusive dedication will be $ 3,000 dollars (monthly) without social insurance discounts.
It is impossible to have a decent life with this salary.
This is the main cause of dropout of teachers ,with doctoral and post doctoral course,from public universities to private agencies.

I think that it applies to a large part of the globe. Some areas are even worse!
Now, did the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2008 affect the educational sector in terms of salaries within the developed vs. developing countries?
The unfairness to the remuneration of University faculty members has always been under debate. It is always a fun comparison between going for a track in commerce versus the academic track. However, back to the main question the salary for more than 90% of the professors worldwide may not be enough to live a "decent" living as compared to the "Title reputation" within the society. But faculty members have managed to pull it together.
It depends on the attitude of one. Once, I was discussing salary hike and phenomenal increase int last time and in the process I told him we were among 5% of Indian population earning as much, the response was there are also Birlas, Tatas, Ambanis earning much higher. I could not remain pointing out that there are also Bill Gates and likes.

However, I think many things are to be considered when discussing salaries for example insurances, social status of the country (are schools and uni free of charge or not), pension etc. In France, we are lucky to have all of the above but still I feel that the salary is unfair especially for junior associate professors living in a very expensive city such as Paris (where more universities are located)
We have in Mexico very good salaries for professors with a PhD. We have too a National System of Researches that give aditional money, from my perspective we can live in a decent form in Mexico. But we can be better, the real question is how much is enough?
