I am working with a DB-WAX column from Agilent, trying to identify components of a fragrance. In my analysis, the samples are vaporized at 250°C and the oven programing is from 50 to 250 °C. A chemical called methyl beta-orcinol carboxylate (Oakmoss, Evernyl, Veramoss) does not get detected, when injected in pure form or as a part of some fragrances. In others, a small peak appears towards the end of the temp programing (@250°C).
Any idea what causes this?
Does it have to do with chemical properties of the sample or column chemistry?
Do organic acids behave differently in DB-WAX?

I think your problems have to do with the structure of your analyte. The molecule has 2 acidic hydoxyl groups which significantly reduce the vapor pressure. Since you are working with a Carbowax column, you limit the maximum temperature to about 250°C.
You may not get this compound out of your inlet system at 250°C. In addition, there may be interactions with active surfaces within your GC (every GC has such active surfaces, unfortunately).
My experience with bisphenols, such as bisphenol A, is that derivatization makes GC analysis much better when acidic hydroxy groups are present. Possibly silylation is an idea that is more feasible for you.
