I an undergraduate student in the Philippines and currently taking up my thesis proposal about a plant extract which has potential antihyperglycemic effects based on its phytochemical analysis in Brazil and I am wondering if can I use it as a basis or do I have to conduct my own phytochemical analysis because I live in the Philippines. And as an undergraduate, I don't have that much money for that analysis.

I am of the opinion that the bioactive metabolites would be similar, that is why taxonomy of the plant is universal. However, the climatic conditions, soil nutrients would affect the amount of the metabolites. So, just to confirm that you are dealing with the specific plant irrespective of location, it is advisable you carry out the analysis

I will advice you to contact your supervisor about your financial strength so that your work could be trimmed to adaptable methods under your reach yet modest enough for an undergraduate work. Basically you do preliminary analysis on your crude extract, this does not cost much, proceed for quantitaive analysis of selected phytochemicals.
Now to your question, It is not right to just pen down figures from articles only because a group of scientist has done similar work. Don't be surprised that some phytochemicals found present in their work may be absence in your own extract. Always remember this, most phytochemicals are secondary metabolite produced as a result of environmental stress. In the absence of such stress other metabolic pathways might take precedence.

It is clear from the above fact that - if someone is taking the sample for analysis, when there was no specific type of stress (or stress is not happening) ..... so that enzyme synthesising gene (s) may be down regulated and/ or a metabolic pathway or step (s) may be not operationalized at that point of time, hence you could not find the specific bioactive principle/compound or even if found, may not be in detectable limit, by sensitive analytic instruments

yes of course, phytochemicals content change from a region to an other, either in the same country, there is a strong correlation between soil content, climatic conditions, photoperiod and pyhtochemicals. We know that due to adaptation, to hydric or salt stress, the plant try to elevate its osmotic tension by producing more phytochemical such as essential oil, to prevent against predator, to attract insects for pollination, etc. The same species could completely change its phytochemicals composition because of extrinsic factors.
