As a result, the iron measured by the Ferrozine method may consist not only of truly dissolved iron but also of complexed iron species.

I had assayed serum iron for tuberculosis patients. The siderophores in the form of exochelins, mycobactins etc are secreted by mycobacteria having higher affinity for ferric iron. Iron is very much needed for the pathogenecity of mycobacteria. While measuring total serum iron for tuberculosis patients, the iron which was bound to siderophores, was dissociated and had come under calculation of total serum iron.
