I assume you mean life-long education. Most professions do expect members to keep themselves aware of developments. They include dentists, veterinary surgeons, It can be short courses, refresher courses. That apart if one does not keep oneself aware of what is happening, one stand the risk of falling behind. An example worth mentioning is the legal profession. Lawyers need to be aware of developments stemming from new legislation introduced by governments, judgements by courts, etc. Scientist may not go for formal education but they would of themselves try to keep themselves abreast by reading papers, attending conferences and getting training in new techniques.

In education we also are lifelong learners as technology is making learning more flexible and we have to keep abreast of the trends in delivery formats. The attached gives an idea some of the trends and issues we have to be prepared for in the 21st Century classroom.

In engineering profession, you need to learn all the time due to rapid technological changes.

For example, if you are working in semiconductor industry then if technology node changes then there are lots of new things you will need to learn.

If you are in teaching then if curriculum changes you need to learn and study new courses of the curriculum before teaching it to the students.

Think life-long learning / education is not only confined within medicine but also applicable to other fields like commerce, engineering, ICT etc. based on epistemological approach for continuous knowledge contribution & discovery.  In ICT, the time needed to develop new products, new techniques, new solutions, new services, new startup companies, new mergers & acquisitions is shorter and shorter in which learning have to be faster & faster.

Is education life-long? It is up to you.

Please do not confuse education with training.

Life-long Education is for everyone. Even government provide incentives for organization for life-long education. Professional now comes with Continuous Professional Development (CPD Points). Professional bodies now require members to have life-long education through Continuous Professional Development (CPD Points). What will be an interesting area will be CPD Points require for life-long education?
