Off course pan sharpening will affect the original spectral quality of of both MSS and PAN data. As far as, algorithm is concerned, brovey transformation is good for urban land use land cover in ERDAS Imagine

For Pan Sharpening, I would suggest you PCI Geomatica 2015 software. Certainly it will affect the original spectral quality. PCI Geomatica software one of the best tool for Pan Sharpening.

Thank you for your answers. So, do you advise pan sharpening for urban impervious surface mapping? Would pan sharpening deteriorate classification or improve it? I was under the assumption that better spatial resolution would improve classification accuracy.

The amount that the pan sharpening procedure affects the spectral characteristics depends on several things including the procedure being used and the spectral bands being used and sharpen.  The links to the papers below will be to articles related to this quesiton and/or might be of interest to you; especially the one where I compared the use of PCA, HIS, and HPF methods to do the pan sharpening.  I hope I did the linking correctly ..........

Thank you for forwarding the articles. May i ask your suggesting if i should pan-sharpen a multi-spectral Landsat OLI bands with panchromatic ( band 8). I'll be using afterwards , Normalized Difference Built-up Index and SAVI ( Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index) and MNDWI ( Modified Normalized Difference Water Index) for subsequent analysis and PCA ( Principal Component Analysis ) Images.

As you know pan sharpening basically 'enhances' the high frequencies within a lower resolution image, so for NDVI and PCA my first thought is that it does not have a major benefit.  Also, the spectral characteristics of the lower resolution band will not be affected very much IFF (if and only if) the pan image is from a similar spectral window.  For example, if the higher resolution pan image covers mostly the visible portion of the spectrum then the spectral characteristics of the lower resolution images in the visible part of the spectrum will not be impacted very much.  However, the spectral characteristics of lower resolution bands in the NIR and SWIR portions of the spectrum can be altered.  I published a paper showing how the various pan sharpening methods can affect the spectral characteristics if this is the case.  Not a major impact but it can affect smaller spatial patterns.
