In 1995, in the paper Derecka K et al. „Does apoptosis occur during follicular atresia in the follicular walls of the porcine ovary? (Reprod.Dom.Anim. 30, 32-35) we demonstrated that  death of porcine ovarian-follicle walls can be caused by different processes and contrary to the granulose cells apoptosis, in the internal theca layer no oligonucleosome fragments were detected in both normal and atretic follicles.

We suggested that possibly theca internal cells death is caused predominantly by“non-lysosomal vesiculate” cell case or  by necrobiotic changes. Is it possible that recently described  programmed necrosis, except apoptosis in bovine  luteal cells  (Hojo T. et al. Programmed necrosis - a new mechanism of steroidogenic luteal cell death and elimination during luteolysis in cows; Scientific Reports, 2016, 6:38211) takes place in smal luteal cells (thecal lutein cells) derived from follicular theca cells ?
