You read an original work. You have access to the translator. You try to clarify issues, ambiguities and questions from both translators and authors. Some critics believe that it is not necessary to contact the translator nor the author. I think otherwise.
The question of whether the contact is necessary certainly depends on whether the text does not present any difficulties for the translator. I agreed to some translations of my essays and a book into Japanese, but it was very good that I kept in touch with the translators. There are plays on words and subtle allusions to facts, so you have to decide together whether they can be reproduced in the other language at all.

As I see it, to translate from one language into another language is a difficult task.
Translators have to master both languages and being well acquainted with the topic at issue.
As I see it, there is much to be gained from exchanges of perpectives between authors and their translators. But this depends on many issues, such as the topic at hand. For example to translate in the poetry domain is a more demading task than to transalate in the prose or even scientific domain,
