I am testing CR2032 coin cell in low temperature, By keeping coin cell in a refrigerator with inert atmosphere which is coupled inside glove box (mbraun). but the charging discharging curves (0.1C) is not giving consistent data. but when we did the charging discharging in air atmosphere, it is giving right results with well charge discharge plateaus.
Does inert atmosphere affect lithium ion battery performance in anyway?
Is there any correlation between low temperature, inert atmosphere and battery charging discharging performance?
I think inert atmosphere is not the problem but temperature is real factor to affect battery performance. normally the testing should be done at a constant room temperature to get reproducable result.
Dear Dhrubajyoti Bhattacharjya, Thanks for your reply... i have attached snapshot of charging discharging of my cell which was cycled at -10 C in refrigerator which is coupled with the glove box...
but when we cycled the same cell inside the glove box even at room temperature we are facing the same problem...although outside the glovebox the same cell runs perfectly.
we have repeated this for 3 cells and everytime we are getting the same kind of results...
apart from this when we run GCD of any cell inside the glovebox, its OCV suddenly decreases from 3.4 V to 1.7 V within 5 seconds....
so may be it is the inert atmosphere which is affecting the performance????
I agree with Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhattacharjya. Maybe your problem is the temperature. The argon thermal conductivity is different from air (atmosphere) thermal conductivity. This could affect you temperature stability and battery temperature dissipation.

It sounds like it could be an issue with the electrical connection into your glovebox. If there is poor electrical contact somewhere in the circuit you will add a series resistance and this will appear as an artifact in the battery data even though it is completely unrelated. What kind of feedthrough are you using? If possible, I would recommend removing the feedthrough and checking the resistance of those connections with a multimeter.

hopping to find a solution to the paradox you claim then :
try to use 4 cables e.g. 2(+) and 2(-) cables, if it is easy, in order to avoid any possible contact resistance artifacts [in other words 2 cables for source and 2 cables for measurement].
Q : If it is possible give us, also, a note about the type of materials in your CR2032 coin cell (specify also the type of the electrolyte)?
