Measurement of HbA1c is a good tool to monitor past (12 weeks) status of blood glucose level but it may sometimes misguide the physician. Recently a patient incidentally diagnosed as diabetes mellitus (fasting 139mg%) during preparation for a surgical intervention, tested for HbA1c. But report says his HbA1c is not detectable. There may be many causes of non detection of HbA1c in diabetic patient. Among them, some cases of HbE, HbD or other traits may be related with condition. But how can we exclude the exact cause of it or manage the limitation?
