I am new to GSAS-II and performing Rietveld refinement. My Rwp is 0.45 and my GOF = 0.4. That seems too good to be true, especially since my data was not the best and I needed a high background to fix it. However, the calculated plot looks near perfect since Le bail extraction significantly improved it.
The question I have is, how can I tell if there was overrefinement or false refinement? What should a realistic GOF/Rwp be?

There may be something not right with your refinement, because GOF can't be less than 1. I do remember I got this error before, but I can't remember the reason. I can help you with this, I have quite experience in GSAS-II and other softwares.

Also, GSAS-II has a particular behavior about the background. It fits better as you improve refinement. I know it's strange, but let me explain. GSAS-II starts every refinement with a 3 degree chebyshev polynomial background, and also, the scale of the graph refines automatically. Before increase the degree of background, try peaks position, shapes, etc, and then increase background degree if needed
