During the manufacturing of a spring from SS AISI 303 wire, we noticed that after electropolishing, the sample does not remain as conductive as it was before. My hypothesis is that since electropolishing reveals a chromium enrich surface, which further interacts with the oxygen to form a continuous layer of Cr2O3 which is semi-conductive in nature and hence our conductivity decreases?

How did you measure the electric conductivity?
I would expect no significant change using a conductivity sensor based on eddy current.
Paul Rosemann I did not measure it through any means. The springs were to be used in an application requiring an electrical connection.
Thus, to verify this, we ran two different lots of springs. One with electropolishing and the other lot without any process. Please note that apart from the electropolishing process, both lots were identical. And when the springs were assembled, the rejection rate due to connectivity failure in the electropolished lot was significantly high whereas, the other lot showed zero defective pieces.
Keeping in view the above results, I developed this hypothesis.
