Dielectric discharge voltage of air is 3 KV/ mm. So if two conducting plates are kept with a potential differene of 3kV and placed at a distance of one mm then air discharge will happen.
If the shape of the electrodes are changed into the form of spike and kept at a distance of one mm, then do I need to keep the voltage difference between these modified electrodes as 3 kV for air discharge or the discharge will happen at a lower voltage ?
This and is needed for setting up a low cost discharge Experiment for students.

3 KV/ mm is not the voltage, that is electric field strength. Probably the electrodes shape will affect local electric field distribution (stronger at sharp parts) thus the overall discharge might happen at lower applied voltage.
Dear Zholudov, I am sorry, the Electric field is 3kV/mm.
This is given as standard value. As you think, I also think that local field may cause dielectric discharge.
But I don't know how it varies with geometry.
