According to literature, chelating N-donor species can coordinate with metal cation (M+) easily. I want to ask that can chelating N-donor can coordinate with all cation or it is only with metal cation? In my case, i have [bmim]+ cation, is it possible that chelating N-donor species can coordinate with [bmim]+ cation?

At d-elements cation indicates the presence of free orbitals, which may
there electron donor. Formed donor-acceptor bonds.
1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ([bmim]+) cation denotes a lack of pi-electron density in the ring imidozolium. According to the rules of symmetry of the donor electrons can not form a stable coordination bond.

A H-bond donor site on the organic cation may be a coordination site for a base acting as a H-bond acceptor. Note that even alkali metal cation may be chelated by bifunctional bases.
I think Yuri Mirgorod give good answer to this question because bonding depend upon electron density.
