In Taiwan, Pitaya flower open in night, In order to avoid fruit fly damage, now Pitaya planted in net house, but artificial pollination need more labor, Now I try to use insect pollinator, but I have no idea about useful pollinator for Pitaya.
Which species? The name Pitaya is, strictly, applied to Stenocereus, which I have never seen in Asia. The dragon fruit or Pitahaya is Hylocereus, and is pollinated in its native range by New World fruit bats and moths. I presume Old World fruit bats pollinate it in Yunnan, where I live, but I have not seen any records of this. I will try to find out.
Climbing epiphytic cacti, members of the genera Hylocereus and Selenicereus, are found throughout Central America, the West indies and South America. The flowers of Pitahaya are hermaphroditic, nocturnal, and strongly scented. Each flower is large, up to 30 cm long, with a long flower tube that fans out into a funnel-shaped corolla with thin, white petals. A nectary chamber is located at the bottom of the flower tube. Flowers exhibit characteristics of those pollinated by night-active bats and large hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). For more information please see the paper of Weiss et. al. 1994.
If you are talking about Hylocereus spp. I agree with Luis Miguel. Here in Cuba the best pollinators of Hylocereus are phyllostomid bats. Although, hawkmoths can also sucessfully pollinate it.
