I am trying to relate the volume of cl anion with formate anion to find the volume occupancy in the crystal lattice. I found the value of formic acid and cl anion on the web but formate is not available. Please tell me the way to calculate/know any experimental value available anywhere.
The structure of formate ion is represented as:
O=CH-O(-)
O=C= 1.23±0.03A
O-C= 1.26±0.03A
Neglecting H
O=C-O(-) = 2.49±0.03A
Taking Two extreme values:
Radius(r) = 2.46 or 2.52 A
Assuming formate anion to be spherical,
Its molar ionic volume(V) will be:
Volume of one anion.N(Avogadro number)
4/3.πr^3.6.023.10^23
For r=2.46A
V=37.573 cm^3/mol
For r=2.52 A
V=40.39 cm^3/mol
