Some locations of traditional Industrial area is not suitable for eco-friendly because people did not consider environmental problems in that period. I think wetlands could be a good filtration to this problem. But I really need some example for reference and case study.
One of the examples are the wetlands of the Biala River (Poland) which for centuries were receiving mining wastewater laden with Zn and Pb.

For specific case study i have no idea, but for filtering metal metals there is a suggestion. normally heavy metals such as nickel and zinc, they can use vegetation to remove which are hreb berkheya coddii and cardaminopsis( Terry N,2000)
