Up until 2000 there were several research studies comparing the outcomes of cardiac surgery with medical treatment. Most studies showed medical treatment to be as effective with similar or better mortality statistics. Cannot not find recent studies. Does anyone know of any?

As indicated by excellent references above, there is no accurate answer to your broad question. It is primarily determined by evaluating an INDIVIDUAL patient. In some cases, surgery is clearly superior; in others, medical; and in others, there is little difference. Treat A PATIENT, not statistics (unless you are a politician.)
