A research assistant and I are conducting primary research on artist in residency programs (artists, writers, etc.) and the use of contemporary art at historic sites to reinvigorate or reinterprete the site. The project includes interviewing artists, site managers, and curators as to the specifics about organizing an artist in residence program and the challenges and opportunities of creating such a program. Contemporary artists can often make us look at historic sites, objects, and or stories/interpretation in new ways. We are exploring what contemporary art, often with a social conscious, can bring to interpretation at historic sites.
