I am looking into the effect of different growth media on the successful establishment of young root stock. Due to this I am looking into previous studies on the different growth medias (i.e. mycorrhizal fungi and sugar solutions) to see what has previously been said about them. I was wondering if anyone had any known papers or sources that might be of help to me.

Are you talking about media for in vitro production or normal propagation? Whic tree species do you want to grow?
This is for normal propagation. I.e. of young tree whips. Some people have identified that through mixing sugar with water when watering a young tree then it benefits the growth rate. I am going to look at Carpinus betulus due to it generally fast growth rate making its differences between the treatments morenoticeable over a shorter period of time.

It is possible, but sugar is also a good substrate for microorganisms and you could run into trouble with undesirable bugs. an ordinary cutting/whip should have enough stored carbohydrates to sustain steady growth, but it depends on conditions - light etc. If you have got a copy of Plant propagation by Hartmann et al. there may be something in it. i will be interested to hear how you get on.
Thank you Helen. I will be doing it in containers and i will be monitoring pests and diseases as part of the trial. And I will probably publish the results at a later date. I will have a look at that book to see what it says about it.
