Biological monitoring has several drawbacks, as high cost, limited number of specialists, and limited taxonomic knowledge (especially in tropical areas). Thus, the use of automated technics could help reduce costs and work load of the limited number of specialists. Facial recognition software have been developed to use morphometric and colour patterns to identify people individually. The same technology has been used to identify animal individuals for behavioural studies. But, I still haven’t seen an attempt to use this technology to propose species identification using photography of individual specimens. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.
