There's a distinction between emotional empathy, where a person's feelings can reflect those of another, and cognitive empathy, where a person can understand what's in another's head. A psychopath might be very good at cognitive empathy, which facilitates interpersonal manipulation, but completely lacking in emotional empathy. Which aspect are you more interested in? Or are you curious about both?

Please look up the work of Professor Simon Baron-Cohen at Cambridge University. He has an empathy scale that can be done online. It has a strong literature to support it and has been used in interesting experiments that have examined relationships between stress and empathy. There is also a literature developing on resilience and its relationship with empathy.

not sure what you mean. Do you mean a scale that can be done on line? I still say you should read about Baron-Cohen's work and his online measure.

For several decades in our studies of empathy-based guilt (worry about harming others), altruism, empathy and psychopathology, we've been using an old (but well-used) measure, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) by Mark Davis. You can find it easily (google scholar). There are four subscales: Empathy Perspective-Taking; Empathy Concern; Empathy Distress; Empathy Fantasy. We use the first three subscales. Empathy Perspective-Taking is  a measure of cognitive empathy, the ability to know/understand others' pain cognitively; Empathy Concern, a measure of emotional  empathy, the degree to which one feels concerned about other's in distress or in need and an important in motivating factor leading to acts of altruism. Empathy Distress is a measure of distress at seeing others in pain etc. High Empathy -Distress, indicates someone getting overly empathic (emotionally), i.e. distressed at witnessing others in distress --this often includes an error in attribution, namely a tendency to feel overly or irrationally responsible for others in distress. In Empathy-Distress the witness becomes unglued and paralyzed by distress and is therefore less likely to be able to act to relieve others' pain/distress. Empathy-distress is associated with depression and other types of psychopathology. Empathy Fantasy measures the tendency to identify with fictional characters in books, movies, etc. 

We developed a measure of empathy based guilt, (the Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire (IGQ-67) with subscales of Survivor Guilt, Omnipotent Responsibility Guilt, Separation Guilt and Self-hate. We also developed the Compassionate Altruism Scale, indicating the degree to which someone is likely to exhibit altruism to family, friends and strangers. You can find these measures in our online studies found at our lab's web site (the Emotion, Personality & Altruism Research Group (EPARG), at www.eparg.org. At this site you will also find downloadable reprints  with reports of studies using these measures. I'm attaching a chapter from Empathy and Mental Illness, Cambridge University Press (2007) summarizing some of our research, and another chapter from Pathological Altruism, (2011), Oxford U. Press, also reviewing some of our research.
