I recall an incident that made a great impression upon me.  It comes back in mind when something similar occurs.  It involved an old professor and a student's rude behavior meant to humiliate him, but how well he handled it.

But this may not be the germ of the story.  It maybe incidental.

How do creative writers use an incident like this?  Are there techniques for changing the shape until we have story material?

Thanks,

Gloria
