I have an excel file that I am trying to analyze in SPSS and the value labels are Very important, etc. I can't get anything besides "Important" to recode into a number so it has to be the length that is the problem. I even tried recoding the string variable in a way that would shorten the string values but that didn't work either.

Hi Linda,
I would recommend to replace the value labels with numeric values in excel (keep a copy of the raw data first) and afterwards open it with SPSS.
