I am trying to figure out if the insect equivalent of cortisol. In insects, there seem to be multiple compounds that may be released, such as biogenic amines, glucocorticoids, etc. Which ones are the most indicative of stress?
Go measurement of membrane permeability functions, there are stress induced molecules which are released from mast cells, in insects there are large hemocytes, though the secreted molecules are not interleukins or cytokine, lymphokine types, but there will be some short peptides of two there amino acids in length may be secreted. Second assay will be based on net use of lipids mainly rate of catebolism of major lipids, sterol utilization and oxygen consumption rate. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species may be created in response to stress. Level of trehalose, biogenic amines, glucocorticoids and phospholipids may be good markers of stress in insects.
