my students are looking for step-by-step procedures for wastewater reuse (and therefore money saving) in small and medium industrial laundries.
We have legal parameters for wastewater discharging and benchmarking for water reuse in laundries, however, we lack clear examples of ecoefficiency in such field. Thank you.
I had some experience in this area calibrating standards for waster waste treatment. Right of the top of my head one of the pharmaceutical I calibrated/certified for treated the waste water by trapping it (water storage), removal of gross materials (i.e., in your case detergents and other chemicals) monitoring phd level once a normal phd is attained water is either reused or discarded. It's an elaborated time consuming process.

Thank you, Eric. However, we have no specific benchmark for residual water, but for intermediary water (applied in production processes).

I refer to industrial laundries that wash industrial clothes (uniforms) and hospital clothes (two different laundries). Residual water is therefore different for each one. We have a law (directive) for potability water parameters, but parameters are the same for all wastewater. I suppose hospitalar clothes' washing require more strict treatment at biological level (like microfilters, nanofilters etc).

I have no idea what your potable water standards are in your country. However, you should begin by analyzing the nutrient load of the various types of laundry facilities. The extraction of some elements is easy enough but the capture and or reuse of these elements is another matter. I would be interested in seeing what the P load is for the two types of laundries. The chemicals used for sanitizing will have impact on your ability to meet potable water quality as well. Do you intend to run the treated water though UV banks?

I can check with these laundries about Phosphorus - whether it is or not a compound of both wastewaters. Such laundries do not employ ultraviolet as treatment, they simply follow legal standards. The main goal is to understand how do they use wastewater, and if they find some efficiency (ecological/economic), lowering costs with water reuse or recycling.
Reutilization of waste water is elaborate process. You still need to collect it, breakdown foreign agents and separate. Treat water by monitoring Acidity to normal values, once it attains a normal value water can be recycled. You may need to develop your own parameters in the process.
