Can I use formaldehyde solution 10% neutralized, stabilized with methanol pure for histology? I am really considered about using it, because I can not find anyone else who uses it.
Commercial Formalin often has methanol added (up to 10%) to stabilize the formaldehyde in solution when they make the Formalin; presenting it from poylmerising. There are a lot of mix-ups on what is "formaldehyde" in the literature.
Formaldehyde = gas.
Saturated in water = formaldehyde solution.
Formalin = neutral buffered formaldehyde solution with additives like methanol to prevent polymerisation of formaldehyde.
Para-formaldehyde = powdered polymerised formaldehyde from solution.
Your formaldehyde with 10% methanol should be fine. Its what people use when they use commercially prepared Formalin.
