From a regulatory standpoint, I am evaluating nitrate/ nitrite concentrations as N based on bulk sediment concentrations for a small freshwater watershed in north Texas. I am evaluating this for risk to benthic invertebrates. Nitrate (as N) concentrations range between 3.33 and 18.7 mg/kg. Nitrite (as N) concentrations range between 0.611 and 6.53 mg/kg. I have only been able to evaluate benthic invertebrate toxicity information for water column concentrations. Can anyone suggest an approach for bulk sediment?  I am not aware of background concentrations for this area of Texas, and so I do not know if these concentrations are problematic or not.
