I am evaluating a risk assessment for a former fertilizer site that is discharging ammonia-impacted groundwater to an adjacent small perennial stream. I can use the U.S. federal ammonia criterion to evaluate surface water impacts, but am struggling with how to evaluate the potential risks to benthos associated with bulk sediment concentrations of ammonia. These range between 30 and 80 mg/kg. I haven't found any bulk sediment tox thresholds and bulk sediment tox tests are not likely to be pursued. Any suggestions?
