I want to perform an ion exchange reaction between anion exchange resin Amberlite IRA Cl and Sodium Cyanate (Na+-OCN )to generate Amberlite IRA+- -OCN. Can anyone suggest me regarding amount of the Resin Amberlite IRA Cl to be taken in comparison to sodium cyanate?
Do you mean Amberlite IRA458 Cl? I assume you're using a column packed with this resin. The amount you need depends on the strength of your starting material, the flow rate, and the desired time before the resin is fully loaded and needs to be regenerated. According to the product data sheet (see link below), the capacity of this resin is >= 1.25 eq/L. As an example, say your solution contains 5 g/L, or 5/65 = 0.077 eq/L. For a 2.5 cm-diameter column packed to a height of 0.75 m, the amount of resin is 0.368 L, which holds 0.368 x 1.25 = 0.46 eq. That means you can process 0.46/0.077 = 5.98 L before having to regenerate. The data sheet recommends a flow rate of 5-40 bed volumes per her. If you choose 10 to be somewhat conservative, the loading time is 5.98/(10 x 0.368) = 1.625 hr. Keep in mind that calculations like this are only approximate, because the resin capacity isn't exact. If there are other anions in your starting material, that will have an effect. Also, the flow through the column is not ideal plug flow, so to avoid loss of material, you need to stop before the resin is fully loaded, which of course reduces the overall capacity.

Thank you Alan, I am using Amberlite IRA-410 chloride form, is the calculation will be same as IRA 458 Cl? if possible, could you please suggest me how to select superior quality resign for the above kind of ion exchange reaction? Thanks in advance.

Yes the calculation is the same. But it's hard to comment on suitability of a specific resin without knowing more about your application, including composition and physical properties of starting material, volume to be treated, and process objective. In your laboratory experiments, you will want to determine actual (as opposed to rated) capacity and regeneration efficiency over multiple loading/regeneration cycles, preferably for a range of flow rates. I read your comment for Mukut and it was very interesting for me. I was working with IRA-410 choride form, I saw in the datasheet, that it should be regenerated with NaOH, but I want to desorbed the retained compounds into the resin, Do you know which solvent or solutions is appropriated for desorbed with this resin?
