The notion of using VAS is to judge on a certain phenomenon based on Vision. And ususally the instruction for individuals to score is by puting X  on the a line ranged from 0 to 10 with two anchors of opposit meaning. As you want to use the VAS online, I will go with the advice you got from your colleague by simply asking participants to give a schore between 0 and 100 {in this case, mostly it is called Rating scale}. The end result is the same as you will convert the scores on VAS to numbers.

Are you definitely stuck up with Survey Monkey or you are open to other survey tools as well ? Lemon Survey, Kobo Toolbox, and even google forms (with a script) can make your job easier.

I am sure there must be other resources as well.

Many hosts who permit you to have a subdoman (for free) also have auto installer packages like for limesurvey. Limesurvey.org which has very advanced question types as well. Skip logic is a feature of most advanced online survey forms which might be necessary in cases of complex surveys / long surveys.

Or they may permit formtool software (php based). If so, it is a good choice as well. http://www.formtools.org (Or you can set this up in any subdomains for free which supports Apache Mysql PHP.

HTML5 tools are also a good choice but will need a lot of customisations / coding may be.

I have used Survey Monkey in the past for a few papers that my colleagues and I have worked on.  It is a great site for surveys, but does have limitations.  What we have done in the past is to work with the ideas of subjective 'all or nothing' responses, then gave middle grounds for ranges that are between these polar opposites.  What we ended up with was a final enumeration that we subjectively talked about via percents.  Take care .

Hi, I've used the 0-100 rating approach you mention and found that almost all answers were given in multiples of 10.  The data was therfore probably more ordinal than scale.

The only online survey builder that I've found with something similar to a VAS is SurveyGizmo (https://www.surveygizmo.co.uk/), which has a sliding scale which is translated into a rating from 0-100 for analysis.
