Dear Hilda: I am looking to treat refinery wastewater with high benzene and phenol content. Rather than other destructive mechanisms, I am evaluating the cost of recovering these compounds for simplicity.
Juzer, I suspect that there are many published studies regarding the sorption of benzene and phenolics to materials such as activated carbon and organic matter. Although that is not a liquid/liquid removal, it is non-destructive.
Pervaporation is a promising technology for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial wastewaters, including petroleum-based solvents such as phenols and benzene. It might constitute an economical alternative to the solvent extraction technology being considered.
