I am searching for a detail description of how to do alpha factoring in SPSS? In the IBM guideline, it is stated that it maximizes alpha reliability among factors. But it is not clear how should I measure it? If I perform alpha factoring it just gives a value of alpha among variables. But how can I calculate reliability among factors? Though Cronbach's Alpha measures reliability among variables but it does not need factor extraction.
Clearly the coefficient of alpha can be realized after your extraction of your factors and in general way betweenw all the indcadores.

From the factor structure (after rotation), and after you've decided which variables are substantively associated with each factor, then just run the reliability program in spss (once for each factor), listing the variables that you have identified as salient for that factor. You will subsequently get (by default) an estimated coefficient alpha for the total score from those variables.

I have checked realibility both for principal axis factoring and alpha factoring..but for both the cases same variables underlie the corresponding factor..According to the definition, alpha maximizes reliability but in my case this is same..So could you please tell me how to explain these facts? @David Morse
